It sits about forty-three miles north of Hong Kong. The city shares borders with many other places. It is near Guangzhou to the west and Shenzhen to the southwest. To the north lies Shaoguan, and Heyuan is to the northeast. Shanwei sits to the east of the city. To the south, the city meets the Daya Bay area of the South China Sea. This area is part of the busy Pearl River Delta.

Many different people live in Huizhou today. In the year 2020, the city had about 6,042,852 inhabitants. This was a big increase from the 2010 census. Most of the people are Han Chinese, making up about 97.69% of the population. Some residents belong to minority groups like the Yao and She. People there speak many languages, such as Hakka, Cantonese, and Hokkien.

The Hakka people live in many districts and have special walled villages. Many people with family roots in Huizhou also live in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

History tells us that Huizhou was once a cultural center. During the Song dynasty, it was a capital for the Huiyang prefecture. A famous man named Su Shi lived there at age 59. He was sent there by the imperial government. He visited a place called Feng Lake and thought it was beautiful. He thought it looked like the West Lake in Hangzhou. Because of this, he renamed it the West Lake. He even helped build two bridges to help people cross the water.

People later named these Su Di bridges to remember his work.

Today, Huizhou is a very important place for making things. It is a major manufacturing base in the Pearl River Delta. There are special areas called development zones for big jobs. The Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone was approved in 1993. This zone helps with making cars and electronics. The Zhongkai High-tech Industrial Development Zone is also very important. It connects to big cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou by large highways. This zone focuses on high-tech things like telecommunications and new materials.

Nature and travel are also part of the city. The weather is humid and subtropical. This means summers are long, hot, and wet. Winters are usually short, mild, and dry. Daya Bay is a beautiful spot on the South China Sea. It has nearly 100 islands and reefs. In the past, gray whales and humpback whales lived in these waters. While those whales are gone, people still see Chinese white dolphins there today. The city also has a large stadium for sports built in 2010.
