geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Jieyang is a large city in the eastern part of Guangdong Province, China. It sits within a famous area known as the Chaoshan region. To the south, the city looks out toward the South China Sea. It shares borders with several other places. Shantou is to the east, and Chaozhou is to the northeast. Meizhou sits to the north, while Shanwei is to the west.

This city is a major center for many different activities. It is known as a place where many people from this region moved to live in Southeast Asia long ago.

The city has a very deep history that goes back many thousands of years. Early people lived in this area more than 10,000 years ago. About 4,000 years ago, people used special kilns to fire clay for pottery. One famous site is the Hutoupu Culture site in Puning City. This site has the largest group of ancient kilns found in Guangdong.

The name Jieyang itself comes from a ridge called Jieyang Ridge. In 214 BC, an emperor set up a military camp on the sunny side of this ridge. Because the sunny side is called "yang," the name Jieyang was born.

Many different languages are spoken by the people living in Jieyang. Most people speak a language called Chaoshan Min. This way of speaking is very old and holds onto sounds from ancient Chinese. It is a very special way to communicate. About 15 million people in the Chaoshan region use this language. Another group of people speaks Hakka. This group makes up about 14.4% of the total population.

Some Hakka speakers live in the hills of Puning, Huilai, and Jiedong.

Jieyang is a busy place for making things and growing food. Many factories produce metal goods, clothing, and shoes. Puning is a very important center for selling Chinese herbal medicines. The city also uses wind power from the ocean to make energy. Farmers in the area grow tasty treats like lychees and tea.

People can travel easily through the city by rail or air. The Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport is the third largest in Guangdong Province. It opened in November 2011 to help people fly in and out.

There are many beautiful and old places to visit in the city. You can see the Jieyang Confucius Temple, which was built in 1140. The Jieyang Guandi Temple is another important site from the Ming Dynasty.

These sites are protected because they are so important to history. The city also has a famous tower and a scenic west lake. From the ancient hills to the busy modern markets, Jieyang connects the past to the present. It remains a vital part of the Chaoshan culture today.
