Guilin has a very long and busy history. The Baiyue people lived in this region a long time ago. A small settlement began along the Li River in 314 BC. Later, the Qin dynasty set up an administration here. During the Tang and Song dynasties, the city became very prosperous. It was a place where armies stayed to guard the borders. Canals were even built to move food from the Yangtze plain. In 1940, the modern Guilin City was officially established.

The city changed a lot during World War II. It became a major center for culture and transport. Many people moved there to stay safe from the war. The population grew from 70,000 to over 500,000 people by 1944.
