Long ago, the name Yantai meant "Smoke Watchtower." This name came from watchtowers built in 1398. Locals used these towers to send signals. They used signal fires and smoke to talk to each other. They even used wolf dung as fuel for the smoke. These towers helped protect the area from pirates. In very old times, people called the local groups the "Eastern Barbarians." Later, the area became part of different Chinese states and kingdoms.
