Rizhao

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Rizhao is a busy city in southeastern China. It sits in the Shandong province right along the Yellow Sea. The name Rizhao actually means "sunshine." This is because its place on the coast lets it catch the sun early. To the northeast, it borders the city of Qingdao. To the north is Weifang, and Linyi is to the west. Across the water to the east, you can see Korea and Japan.

The city is a very important place for shipping. It has a large seaport called the Port of Rizhao. This port is a hub for moving many different things. Big ships carry iron ore and coal through the harbor. They also move cement, nickel, and bauxite. In 2011, the port joined an alliance with the city of Busan in Korea. This helps make the area a major center for shipping in Northeast Asia.

Rizhao has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, the Dawenkou and Longshan cultures lived there. During the Xia and Shang dynasties, it belonged to the Dongyi people. Later, it was part of the Ju and Yue States. The city was once called Haiqu County during the Han dynasty. In 1087, during the Northern Song dynasty, Rizhao Town was established. It became a prefecture-level city in 1989.

Many people live in this coastal area. As of 2020, about 2,968,365 people lived in Rizhao. Over one million of those people live in the Donggang District. The city is also known for being very green and sustainable. Since 1992, all new buildings must have solar water heaters. These use the sun to heat water for homes. By 2007, 99% of homes in the central districts used them.

Visitors can find many beautiful things to see in Rizhao. There is the Zaishui Art Museum, which sits on an artificial lake. You might also visit Wulian Mountain or Wanpingkou Beach. The city has a special climate with four seasons. It gets about 2,310 hours of bright sunshine every year. Because it is on a peninsula, spring starts a month later than in other places. This makes the weather feel unique to the coast.
