This city is a major hub for moving goods around the world. It is the eastern end of the New Eurasian Land Bridge. This is a huge railway network that connects Lianyungang to over 40 countries. These paths reach into Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia. The port is also a very important part of the Maritime Silk Road. This sea route connects the Chinese coast to places like Singapore and the Mediterranean. Because of these paths, the city links sea routes with land routes.

Lianyungang has a long history of trading with other lands. In the past, people knew the city as Haichow. This name meant "City of Sea." In 1905, the Qing imperial government opened the city to foreign trade. Today, it is a growing center for industry and tourism. The city is home to about 4.65 million people. Many of these people live in the built-up areas of Haizhou and Lianyun.
