Because it has a deepwater harbor, it is a vital port for moving goods.

The land in Nantong was not always there. It was created over many centuries by mud and sand from the Yangtze River. This is called alluvial accretion. As the river moved, the coastline grew toward the southeast. Some areas, like Haimen, were under the water for long periods. The land did not become steady until the late 1800s.

Today, the ground is mostly flat and part of a large river delta.

Long ago, the area was very different. By the 9th century, a place called Langshan was a military outpost. In the year 875, a group of men led a rebellion there. Later, the area became a base for the Yao clan. They lived by fishing and making salt. In the year 960, the area was named Tongzhou.

In the 1800s, the way people lived changed. They stopped making as much salt and started growing cotton. In 1895, a man named Zhang Jian started the Dasheng Cotton Mill. This helped the city become a center for making cloth. By 1913, Nantong was third in the whole country for cotton mills. Zhang Jian also built schools, hospitals, and parks.
