Ma'anshan

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ma'anshan is a large city in the eastern part of Anhui province in China. It sits right along the Yangtze River and is surrounded by low hills. You can find it near the city of Hefei to the west and Wuhu to the southwest. To the east, it borders the city of Nanjing. Because it is so close to Nanjing, it is part of a large group of connected cities. This area is also known as the Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone.

The name Ma'anshan means "Horse Saddle Mountain." This name comes from a very old legend about a general named Xiang Yu. The story says he was fleeing from a battle and died in this area. His horse was so sad that it jumped into the river and drowned. To honor the horse, a boatman buried its saddle on a nearby hill. This is how the city got its special name.

Ma'anshan has a long history of working with the earth. For a very long time, people have mined the land near the river. In the 1930s, a railroad helped people reach coal fields in the area. This allowed for the opening of iron and steel works in 1938. Although these industries were destroyed during a war, they were rebuilt by 1953. Today, the city is famous for making steel, which is why people call it "Steel City."

Many different things happen in this city every day. The weather is warm and wet with four distinct seasons. In the fall, sweet-scented osmanthus flowers bloom across the land. Many people also plant camphor trees because they are very popular. These trees are often used to bring good luck to a home. The city is also known for its big river port. This port helps move goods quickly to other cities.

There are many interesting places to visit in and around Ma'anshan. You can see Caishi Rock, which is a famous spot by the Yangtze River. There is also a memorial for a famous poet named Li Bai. Some stories say he lived near this city a long time ago. For shopping, people visit large places like Dahua International Plaza. The city even has a huge sports stadium that holds over 36,000 people.
