It sits where the Yangtze River flows into the East China Sea. This region is also called the Jiangnan region. It includes most of Shanghai and parts of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui. The land here is very flat and fertile. This makes it a great place for many people to live and work. It is one of the most developed urban areas in all of China.

Life in the delta is very active and fast. Many large cities sit very close to each other. This creates a massive group of connected metropolitan areas. Shanghai is a major center for money and banking. Other big cities include Hangzhou, Suzhou, Ningbo, and Nanjing. The area is also a hub for making things. Factories here produce many items, such as cloth and cars. It is also a popular place for tourists to visit.

This region has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, the Liangzhu culture lived in this area. During the Eastern Zhou period, powerful states like Wu and Yue were here. The city of Nanjing served as a capital many times. During the Tang dynasty, the delta became a center for trade and farming. Later, the city of Hangzhou was the capital during the Southern Song dynasty. At that time, it was one of the biggest and richest cities in the world.

Today, the Yangtze Delta is home to over 123 million people. This is about 9% of the entire population of China. The area is very crowded, with many people living in cities. In 2024, the region's economy was worth about US$3.2 trillion. This is roughly the same size as the economy of France. The delta also has many ways to travel. It has the world's largest ports for handling cargo and containers. You can also find the Hangzhou Bay Bridge here. It is 36 km long and is the longest bridge over the sea.

Nature and weather also play a big part in the delta. The climate is subtropical with a monsoon influence. Summers are usually hot and humid. Winters are cool and dry, but they can sometimes get very cold. The soil is perfect for growing rice, which is the main crop. People also catch a lot of fish in the many ponds and rivers. However, the large number of people and factories can cause pollution in the water. This is a concern for the fish farmers who live there.
