Because it is near the water, it is a very important port city.

The Port of Yingkou is a huge place for ships. It is the second-largest container port in the Bohai Sea. In Northeast China, it is the second-largest port after Dalian. This port is also the tenth-largest in all of China. Around the world, it is the 25th busiest port. The city is known as a Medium-Port Metropolis. Many different industries work here, such as steel and textiles. They also do work with chemicals and minerals.

Yingkou has a long and interesting history. In the past, people called it Newchwang. It was one of the Treaty Ports opened in 1858. The old town of Newchwang was actually thirty miles upstream. It was located in what is now the city of Haicheng. British ships found that the river there was too shallow. Because of this, the port moved closer to the river mouth. This is where the modern city of Yingkou sits today.

Many people call Yingkou home. In the year 2020, the population was 2,328,582 people. Most people live in the metro area. This area includes three urban districts named Zhanqian, Xishi, and Laobian. It also includes the city of Dashiqiao. The city is divided into four districts and two cities. One of these is the Bayuquan District. Another is the city of Gaizhou. The total area of the city is 5,415.64 square kilometers.

The weather in Yingkou changes with the four seasons. The winters are long, windy, and cold. The summers are hot and humid. Most of the rain falls during July and August. Even so, the city gets 2,774 hours of bright sunshine every year. People in Yingkou also enjoy sports like basketball. The Liaoning Flying Leopards are a famous basketball club here. They play their home games at the Benxi Gymnasium. The city is also connected to the world through the Yingkou Lanqi Airport.
