You can find Lake Taymyr and the Byrranga Mountains here. Cape Chelyuskin is at the very top end. This cape is the northernmost point of the whole continent.

The weather here is very cold and harsh. Most of the coasts stay frozen from September until June. The summer season is quite short in the northeast. In the north, the land has a tundra climate. This means it is very cold and frozen. Further south, the climate is subarctic. These areas have slightly warmer summers. This warmth allows some trees to grow there.

Many different groups of people call this place home. The Dolgans are the largest indigenous group living here. Other groups include the Nenets, Enets, and Evenks. The Nganasan people also live in central Siberia. Some people live in settlements like Ust-Avam, Volachanka, and Novaya. Others live in the towns of Dudinka and Norilsk.

There are many stories about the name "Taimyr." One idea comes from the Evenki word "tamura." This word means something precious or rich. People once used this name for the Taimyr River. In the 1800s, an explorer named Alexander von Middendorff used it for the peninsula. Other languages have different meanings for the name. In Yakut, it might mean "salt lake." In Nenets, it could mean "bald" or "bare."

This land has a very old history with animals. Scientists found that woolly mammoths lived here long ago. They may have stayed until about 4,000 years ago. The peninsula also has muskox. These animals were brought back to the area in 1975. The number of muskox grew to 6,500 by 2010. Today, companies like Norilsk Nickel work in the area. They mine nickel ore and move it by train and boat.
