A wetland is a special place where the land is soaked with water.

This water can stay for years or it may come and go with the seasons. Wetlands act like a bridge between dry land and deep water. They are known as an ecotone, which is a transition zone between two different areas. These places are among the most diverse ecosystems on our planet. They provide homes for many different kinds of plants and animals.

Water covers the soil for long periods of time. This flooding causes the soil to become anoxic, meaning it has very little oxygen. Because of this, plants must have special roots to survive in waterlogged ground. These plants are called hydrophytes.

Different types of wetlands depend on the plants that grow there. Marshes are filled with grasses like reeds and cattails. Swamps are filled with woody plants like trees and shrubs.

Some wetlands, like mangrove forests, have plants that can handle salty water.

People have studied these areas for a long time. In 1971, an international treaty was started to help protect them. This treaty focuses on wetlands of international importance.

Experts use special methods to check how healthy a wetland is. These checks help people understand why we must save them. In the United States, the government uses specific rules to define what a wetland is. This helps them make laws to protect the land.

Wetlands can be found on every continent except Antarctica.

The water can be fresh, salty, or a mix called brackish. Some of the biggest wetlands are the Amazon River basin and the Pantanal in South America.

Others include the West Siberian Plain and the Sundarbans. There are many local names for them too. For example, people in Australia call some wetlands billabongs. In Ireland, they are often called turloughs.

Wetlands do many important jobs for the Earth. They act like a filter to clean water by removing extra nutrients. They also help protect shores from storms and help control floods.

Some wetlands act as a carbon sink. This means they take in and store carbon to help with climate change. However, humans are causing damage to these areas. Activities like building, overfishing, and pollution make them very threatened.
