A swamp is a special kind of forested wetland.

These areas are called transition zones. This is because land and water both play a role in making them. Swamps can be found all around the world. They can contain fresh water, brackish water, or even seawater.

Freshwater swamps often grow near large rivers or lakes. They rely on rainwater and seasonal flooding to keep their water levels moving. Some swamps even have hammocks. These are dry spots of land covered by plants that like wet soil.

Swamps work in a very helpful way to clean our planet.

The water in a swamp moves very slowly. As it flows, the swamp acts like a filter. It can pull out sediment and pollutants. Plants in the swamp soak up chemicals like nitrogen and phosphorus.

These chemicals are used by the plants to grow. Any extra chemicals sink to the bottom. They get buried in the sediment at the base of the swamp. This process helps keep the water pure for other living things.

People have changed swamps in many different ways over time.

In the past, many people thought swamps were not useful land. Farmers often drained them to make more space for crops. Others built ditches or canals to move the water away. This sometimes let salt water move into places it did not belong. In places like Louisiana, these changes caused many wetlands to be lost. However, many people now work to restore swamps. They might plug up old ditches to bring the water back.

There are many famous swamps across the globe.

The Amazon River floodplain is the largest swamp in the world. It is home to many different kinds of fish and trees. In the United States, the Atchafalaya Swamp is the largest. It is located at the end of the Mississippi River. The Vasyugan Swamp in Russia is also huge. It covers an area even larger than the country of Switzerland. These places show how much variety exists in nature.

Swamps are very important for the health of the Earth. They act as a natural defense against flooding. When too much rain falls, swamps soak up the extra water. This stops the water from flooding nearby homes or fields.

The thick plants also help hold the soil in place. This prevents erosion, which is when land washes away. Swamps also provide oxygen and fresh water for many species. They are also great places for fish and shellfish to grow. Two thirds of the fish we eat depend on wetlands.
