A marsh is a special kind of wetland. It is a low area that stays wet or floods often.

What makes a marsh different from a swamp is the plants. Swamps have many trees, but marshes are filled with grasses, reeds, or rushes. If there are small shrubs, the area might be called a carr. Some low lands in Europe are even called polderlands when people drain them. These places are very important for our planet. They hold about 0.1% of the world's stored carbon in the ground.

Living in a marsh can be a hard job for plants and animals. The mud is very wet and often has very little oxygen. To survive, many marsh plants have aerenchyma. These are tiny air channels inside the stem. They move air from the leaves down to the roots.

Many plants also use rhizomes, which are parts used for storage and growing new plants. Animals like fish, frogs, and birds must also adapt. Some aquatic animals can get oxygen from the air. Others can live for a long time even when oxygen in the water is very low.

Scientists and people have studied these areas for a long time. Researchers look at how marshes help the Earth. For example, they study how marshes act as a sink to filter out pollution. They also look at how marshes help stop flooding. During heavy rain, marshes soak up extra water and release it slowly. This protects nearby areas from big floods. People also use marshes for fun things like tourism, research, and education.

There are three main types of marshes found around the world. Salt marshes are near the ocean and feel the pull of the tides.

They grow where sediment, or tiny bits of earth, builds up quickly. Freshwater tidal marshes are also moved by tides, but they do not have much salt. Freshwater marshes are the most common in North America. They include wet meadows, which are often dry in the summer. They also include vernal pools, which are seasonal pools in grasslands or forests.

Marshes are linked to many different landscapes you might know. In the southern High Plains of the United States, you can find playa lakes. These are shallow marshes that appear only at certain times of the year. In northern North America, there are prairie potholes. These were made by old glaciers that left deep holes in the ground.

Some marshes are also found along the edges of large rivers. Even though some marshes are being lost to cities, people are working on restoration. This means bringing marshes back to the land to help nature.
