Wetlands are categorized into several main types based on their dominant plants. Marshes are dominated by emergent herbaceous vegetation, such as reeds, cattails, and sedges. Swamps are characterized by woody vegetation, such as trees and shrubs. Mangrove forests are a specific type of wetland where halophytic woody plants have evolved to tolerate salty water. Another group includes peatlands, such as bogs and fens. In bogs and fens, the slow decay of dead plants under anoxic conditions leads to the accumulation of organic peat.

The water itself can be freshwater, brackish, or saltwater. In some regions, such as the United States, scientists use the Cowardin classification system. This system includes marine, estuarine, riverine, lacustrine, and palustrine types.

Wetlands provide many essential ecosystem services that benefit the planet and humans. They act as natural filters by removing excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphorus, which improves water quality. They also help with shoreline stabilization, storm protection, and flood control. Wetlands play a major role in the carbon cycle through carbon fixation and sequestration. Some wetlands act as a carbon sink, helping to mitigate climate change by storing carbon. However, they can also be a source of methane and nitrous oxide emissions due to anaerobic decomposition.

These ecosystems are found on every continent except Antarctica. Large examples include the Amazon River basin and the West Siberian Plain.
