How does a bog work?

It starts with plants like sphagnum moss growing in wet areas. Over many years, these plants die and pile up. In most places, dead plants rot away quickly. But in a bog, the soil is very wet and has low oxygen. This makes decay happen very slowly. Because the plants do not rot fast, the peat builds up deep into the ground. Many bogs have peat that is many meters deep. Most of their water comes from rain, not from the ground. This rain-fed water lacks minerals, so the bog stays very acidic.

They are common in cool, northern places. The largest peat bogs are in the Western Siberian Lowlands in Russia. These cover more than a million square kilometers. You can also find large bogs in North America. These are in the Hudson Bay Lowland and the Mackenzie River Basin. In the Southern Hemisphere, the biggest ones are the Magellanic moorlands in South America. Some bogs, like the one in the Republic of the Congo, are as big as England.

Because the soil has very few nutrients, plants have to be clever. Some plants are carnivorous, meaning they eat insects to get nutrients. The pitcher plant and the sundew are good examples. Other plants, like orchids, use fungi to help them find food. Many animals call the bog home too. You might see moose, beavers, or caribou there. Some special insects live there, like the bog copper butterfly. Even reptiles like the bog turtle or the viviparous lizard live in these wet lands.

The way a bog forms is a slow and steady process. It usually begins in poorly draining lake basins or flat, marshy areas. In these wet environments, plants like sphagnum moss grow in large amounts. When these plants die, they settle into the water. In most ecosystems, dead plants rot away quickly. However, bog soils are saturated with water and have very low oxygen levels. This lack of oxygen makes decay happen extremely slowly.

As a result, the dead material piles up over many years. This buildup creates thick layers of peat that can reach many meters in depth. Most bogs are ombrotrophic, meaning they receive most of their water and nutrients from precipitation. Because rain lacks dissolved minerals like calcium or magnesium, the water remains very acidic. This acidity prevents the natural buffering of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Bogs can be categorized by their shape and how they receive water. One type is the valley bog. These develop in gently sloping valleys or hollows where peat fills the deepest parts.

Another type is the raised bog. These start from a lake or marsh. Over centuries, peat accumulates until the surface is too high for groundwater to reach the center. This makes the center entirely rain-fed, creating a shallow dome of peat. A third type is the blanket bog. These occur in cool climates with very high rainfall. In these areas, the bog grows as a layer that "blankets" the landscape, including hills and slopes.

Bogs are widely distributed across the globe, mostly in cold, temperate regions. They are common in the boreal ecosystems of the Northern Hemisphere. The largest wetland in the world is the peat bog of the Western Siberian Lowlands in Russia. This massive area covers more than one million square kilometers.

Other plants, such as certain orchids, use mycorrhizal fungi to extract nutrients from the environment. Some shrubs, like bog myrtle, use root nodules for nitrogen fixation. Bogs also support diverse animals. You might find caribou, moose, or beavers there. They are also home to specialized insects like the bog copper butterfly and reptiles like the bog turtle or the viviparous lizard.

Despite their importance, bogs are fragile and are currently facing significant threats. Many bogs in Northern Europe have been cleared or drained for agriculture. A 2019 study showed that European peatlands are drying rapidly due to human impacts like peat cutting and burning.

Extreme weather, such as dry summers, also causes the ground to crack and lose oxygen. This is especially concerning because bogs in Arctic and sub-Arctic circles are warming at 0.6 °C per decade. This warming rate is twice the global average. As they warm and dry, these carbon sinks can actually release large amounts of greenhouse gases back into the atmosphere.

Protecting these ecosystems is a major priority for many conservation agencies. In the United Kingdom, bogs are a priority under the Biodiversity Action Plan. Russia uses a large reserve system, including protected areas called Zapovedniks, to shield the West Siberian Lowlands.

Because it takes thousands of years for a bog to form and create peat, they are extremely difficult to recover once they are lost. Maintaining the water levels and acidity of these lands is essential for preserving both their unique biodiversity and their role in the global climate system.
