A bog is a special kind of wetland.

The ground is soft and spongy. This is because of peat. Peat is a thick layer of dead plants. These plants, like sphagnum moss, pile up over a long time. In a bog, plants decay very slowly. This happens because there is very little oxygen in the wet soil.

Bogs get most of their water from rain. They do not get much water from the ground. Because of this, bogs are very acidic. This means the water has a low pH level. The water can also look brown. This color comes from tannins in the peat.

Life in a bog is unique. Since the soil lacks nutrients, some plants are carnivorous. These plants, like the pitcher plant, eat insects to get what they need. Bogs also provide homes for many animals. You might find moose, beavers, or special butterflies there.

Bogs are important because they act as a carbon sink. This means they store carbon to help the planet.
