Mosses are small green plants.

They often grow in thick mats. Most mosses live in damp or shady places. They do not have seeds or flowers. Instead, they use tiny spores to make new plants.

Most mosses are non-vascular plants. This means they lack the tubes that larger plants use to move water. Instead, they absorb water through their leaves. Their leaves are very simple. They are often only one cell thick. Mosses also use tiny threads called rhizoids to stay in place. These threads act like little anchors.

To grow, a spore must first turn into a thin green layer called a protonema. From this layer, the green moss shoots grow. These shoots have male and female parts. Mosses need water to reproduce. The male sperm must swim through water to reach the female part.

After fertilization, a tall stalk grows from the plant. This stalk holds a capsule. The capsule holds more spores. When the spores are ready, the wind carries them away. Mosses are very helpful to our Earth. They help clean the air and keep soil in place.
