There are about 20,000 different species. They include mosses, liverworts, and hornworts.

These plants are usually small. They do not have true vascular tissue. Vascular tissue is a set of parts that moves water. Because they lack this, they do not need roots to take in food. This lets them grow on bare soil or rocks.

Bryophytes live in many places. They grow in cold areas and hot deserts. They can grow in wet forests or dry lands.

These plants have a special way of growing. They use a life cycle called alternation of generations. Most of the time, the plant is a gametophyte. This is the main part of the plant. The gametophyte makes sperm and eggs. The sperm must swim through water to reach an egg. Once they meet, a sporophyte grows. The sporophyte is a small part that stays attached to the main plant. It makes spores. The wind carries these spores to new places.
