Hornworts are small plants that live on land. They like damp or wet places. You might find them in garden soil. Some grow on the bark of trees.

The main part of the plant is green and flat. It can look like a thin ribbon. This part is called a gametophyte. Some hornworts look blue-green. This happens when tiny bacteria live inside them.

A hornwort grows long parts that look like horns. These are called sporophytes. The horns grow from the green body. They use a special part to make new cells. This part is a basal meristem. This helps the horn grow longer over time.

Inside the horn, the plant makes spores. Spores are tiny cells that start new plants. Some spores have thick walls. These walls help them stay safe for years. When the horn is ready, it splits open. This lets the spores fly away.

Scientists are still studying these plants. They do not know the exact number of species. There are at least 300 names, but there may be fewer. We are still finding new ones today.
