Hornwort

Hornworts are a unique group of small land plants. They belong to a division called Anthocerotophyta. You can find them all over the world. Most hornworts prefer to grow in damp or humid places. Some species grow as tiny weeds in garden soil. Other large species, like Dendroceros, grow on tree bark.

The life of a hornwort has two main stages. The first stage is the gametophyte. This is the green, flat part of the plant. It often looks like a thin ribbon or a small rosette. It can be one to five centimeters wide. Some hornworts look blue-green because of tiny bacteria living inside them. These bacteria are called cyanobacteria.

To make new plants, the hornwort grows long structures. These look like tiny horns and are called sporophytes. The horn grows from a special area called a basal meristem. This part stays at the bottom and keeps making new cells. Inside the horn, the plant makes spores. These spores are tiny cells that can start new life. Some spores have thick walls to stay safe for many years.

Scientists are still learning about these plants. They are not sure how many species exist. There are more than 300 published names. However, the actual number might only be 100 to 150 species. Researchers study their genes to understand how they grew on land. They found that hornworts are one of the earliest groups of land plants. They branched off from other plants a very long time ago.

Hornworts are very different from the plants in your backyard. Most land plants use special chemicals called flavonoids. Hornworts are the only land plants that do not have them. They also have a special way to use carbon. They use a tool called a pyrenoid to help with photosynthesis. This helps them turn light into energy more efficiently. This feature is common in algae but very rare in land plants.
