Bryopsida

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Most mosses belong to a group called Bryopsida. This group is very big. It has about 11,500 different species. You can find them all over the world.

These mosses have special parts called capsules. A capsule is a tiny pod that holds spores. Inside the pod, there is a small lid. We call this lid an operculum. When the spores are ready, the lid falls off. This reveals an opening called a stoma. A stoma is like a little mouth.

Around the mouth, there are tiny teeth. These teeth are called a peristome. In this group, the teeth are jointed. This means they are separate and can move. They can fold in or fold back. This helps let the spores out. Scientists call these jointed teeth arthrodontous.

Some mosses have one ring of teeth. We call this type haplolepidous. Other mosses have two rings of teeth. We call this type diplolepidous. The second ring is called an endostome. It is a thin, delicate part. These teeth help the moss spread its spores.
