The tea family is a group of plants. It includes shrubs and trees. Some of these plants make tea. Others have pretty flowers for gardens.

Most of these plants live in East Asia. Some also grow in the Southeast United States. Many have leaves that stay green all year. These leaves are often shiny with bumpy edges.

The flowers are often large and showy. They are usually white or pink. Some flowers even have a strong scent. Most plants in this group have many stamens. Stamens are the parts that make pollen. These plants also have a special kind of pollen. We call this pseudopollen. It has tiny ribs or circles on it.

Some plants in this family are very special to humans. The tea plant is the most famous. It has caffeine in its leaves. Humans picked this plant because of that. The caffeine makes up about 2.5 to 4 percent of the leaf. Other plants in the family have different parts. Some have crystals inside them. Others have special acids.
