A fen is a special kind of wetland.

It is a place where peat builds up over time. Peat is made of old, dead plants. Fens get their water from the ground or from the surface. This water is full of minerals. These minerals come from the rocks the water flows through.

Because of these minerals, fens have a unique chemistry. They often have a higher pH than bogs. A pH tells us if water is acidic or basic. Rich fens have many minerals. These fens are home to many rare plants and animals.

Fens are also very important for our planet. The soil in a fen is often anaerobic. This means it has no oxygen because it is so wet. This lack of oxygen helps the fen store carbon. Storing carbon is a way to help the Earth. However, fens face many threats. People sometimes turn them into farms. Pollution and dry soil can also hurt them. If the peat gets too dry, it can even burn.
