The Pantanal is the world's largest tropical wetland.

Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brasil

It is a huge area of flooded grasslands. Most of it is in Brazil. It also reaches into Bolivia and Paraguay.

This land changes with the seasons. During the rainy season, most of the land is under water. The water flows slowly because of thick plants. This flooding helps many plants and animals grow.

Many animals live in the Pantanal. You can find hundreds of kinds of birds and fish. There are also many mammals and reptiles. The area has a very large number of caimans. These are large reptiles that look like crocodiles. The Pantanal also has many healthy jaguars.

Aerea

A small animal called the apple snail helps the land. When plants die in the water, they rot. This can use up all the oxygen. The apple snail has both gills and lungs. It uses a long snorkel to breathe air. This lets the snail eat dead plants. It turns them into food for other living things.
