The Cerrado is very rich in life. It has about 10,000 types of plants. Many animals live here too. You can find 837 types of birds. There are nearly 200 types of mammals. Some animals are endemic. This means they live in the Cerrado and nowhere else. For example, 11 types of mammals live only here. Leaf cutter ants are very busy in the soil. They help break down old plant matter. This helps the land stay healthy. Many rivers start in the Cerrado. These rivers carry water to many other places.
