It covers parts of Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil. The name comes from a word meaning "hunting land." This is because the area has so many animals.

The land is mostly flat. Some parts are very dry with thorn trees.

Other parts are wet with swamps and palm trees. This region is the second largest forest area on the continent. It is home to many living things. You might see a jaguar or a giant armadillo.

There are also 500 types of birds and 3,400 types of plants.

Many people live in the Chaco today. About 4 million people call it home. Some groups have lived there for many centuries. They live close to the land to survive.

But the forest is changing. People use the land for cattle ranching and big farms. This can hurt the natural woods. In Argentina, much forest was lost between 1998 and 2023. People are working to protect the land in places like Kaa-Iya National Park.
