Llanos

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Llanos is a vast plain in South America.

It sits in Colombia and Venezuela. To the west, the Andes mountains rise up. To the north, you will find the Venezuelan Coastal Range. The Orinoco River flows through the middle. This river runs from west to east. It helps form the border between the two countries.

The weather has two main parts. There is a rainy season from April to November. Then comes a dry season from December to March. During the wet months, the land can flood. The water can rise up to one meter high. This creates wetlands for many animals.

You might see many animals here. Large cats like jaguars and pumas live in the forests. You can also find giant anteaters and capybaras. Water birds, like the scarlet ibis, live in the wet areas.

People use the land in many ways. Many people herd cattle on the grass. These workers are called llaneros. People also grow crops like rice and maize. Deep in the ground, there are large deposits of oil. This is part of the Orinoco Belt.
