Llanos

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Llanos is a huge area of tropical grasslands and savannas. It sits in northwestern South America. This region spans across Colombia and Venezuela. To the west, the Andes mountains form a high border. The Venezuelan Coastal Range sits to the north. To the southeast, you will find the Guiana Highlands. The Orinoco River is the main river of this place. It flows from west to east through the plains. This large river also helps form the border between Colombia and Venezuela.

The weather in the Llanos follows a seasonal pattern. It has a tropical savanna climate. There is a rainy season from April to November. The wettest months are usually June and July. After the rain, a dry season begins in December. It lasts until March. During the rainy season, the land can flood quite a bit. Water can rise up to one meter high in some areas. These seasonal floods turn the grasslands into temporary wetlands. This creates a special home for many different water birds.

Plants and animals live in many different parts of the Llanos. Some areas are called llano alto, which stay dry all year. These places have grasses and shrubs that grow about 30 to 100 cm high. Other areas are called llano bajo, which flood during the rains. These flooded lands have richer soils. You might see trees like the manteco or the chaparro growing there. Many animals call this place home. You can find giant anteaters, capybaras, and white-tailed deer. Large cats like jaguars and pumas also live in the forests.

People have lived and worked in the Llanos for a long time. Since the Spanish colonial era, many people have herded cattle here. The workers who take care of the herds are called llaneros. This name is similar to the gauchos of the Pampas. Today, people also use the land for farming rice and maize. Some farmers even grow rice in former seasonal wetlands. The governments of Venezuela and Colombia also work in the oil and gas industry. Large amounts of oil are found in the Orinoco Belt.

Protecting this large region is very important for nature. A study in 2017 showed that 28% of the area is protected. This covers about 105,323 square kilometers. In Venezuela, there are places like Aguaro-Guariquito National Park. Another protected area is the Cinaruco-Capanaparo National Park. Colombia also has the El Tuparro National Natural Park. These parks help keep the plants and animals safe. Many special animals, like the long-nosed armadillo, live only in the Llanos.
