It serves as the capital of the Meta Department. The city sits in a special place where the mountains meet the flat plains. It is located near the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes mountains. To the north and east, the mighty Guatiquía River flows by the city.

People often call the city "Villavo la bella." They also use the name "The Gateway to the Plains." This is because the city sits on the historical path to the vast savannas. These plains are known as the Llanos.

The weather in Villavicencio is very tropical. It is often hot and quite humid. Most of the day feels very warm to people living there. However, the city sits near the foothills of the Andes mountains. These mountains help bring cool breezes in the morning and evening. This makes the air feel much nicer when the sun goes down. Rain is also a big part of life here. For eight months of the year, the rain falls quite often.

History shows how much this place has changed over time. Long ago, the vast plains were mostly unexplored by many people. In the 1840s, some farmers started a small settlement called Gramalote. This small group of people grew into the parish of Villavicencio in 1855. The town was named after a patriot named Antonio Villavicencio. In the 1850s, the settlement had no more than 20 people. By the year 2018, the population grew to 531,275 people.

Today, the city is a very important center for business and trade. It helps move many things like cattle and crops. Farmers send their goods to big markets in Bogotá. The city also works with oil and gas from the Apiay field. Construction is another big way people work in the area. New roads with bridges and tunnels make travel much faster now. It only takes about one and a half hours to drive to Bogotá. This helps move products like coffee, bananas, and rice more quickly.

There are many interesting things to see and do in Villavicencio. You can visit the Los Ocarros Biopark to see local animals. This park helps protect the plants and animals of the Orinoco region. You might even see a giant armadillo or a caiman there. The city also loves sports and culture. There is a football team called the Llaneros fútbol club. People also enjoy the annual festival held every April 6.
