Because the city is so high up, the weather stays quite cool. Even though it is near the equator, the high altitude keeps it from getting too hot. The average high temperatures are usually between 19 and 22 degrees Celsius. The average low temperatures stay between 8 and 11 degrees Celsius. This makes the weather feel very consistent throughout the year.

The history of the city goes back a long time. Spanish explorers founded Pasto in 1537. It was named after the indigenous people who lived there. A man named Sebastián de Belalcázar was the founder. Later, in 1539, Lorenzo de Aldana moved the city to its current spot. He named it San Juan de Pasto. For a long time, the city was a center for religion and culture. It was even known as the theological city of Colombia. During the wars for independence, the city stayed loyal to Spain. This meant it was isolated from the rest of Colombia for a while.

Life in Pasto is full of color and tradition. Every year from January 2 to January 7, the city holds the Blacks and Whites' Carnival.
