The city is one of the most populous places in the country. About 544,132 people live in the whole municipality. Around 500,000 of these people live in the urban city area. It is the eleventh largest city in all of Colombia. This city is a center for business, art, and tourism.

The city sits high up in the Colombian Andes mountains. It is surrounded by many peaks on almost every side. To the east, there is a flat area called a plateau. Ibagué is near two active volcanoes. One is called Nevado del Tolima to the northwest. The other is Cerro Machín, which is west of the city center.

While Cerro Machín has been quiet for 800 years, it did release a tall steam column in 2007.

Spanish history shaped how the city looks today. A captain named Andrés López de Galarza founded it in 1550. At first, it was called San Bonifacio de Ibagué del Valle de las Lanzas. The city was actually started in a different spot near Cajamarca. The local Pijaos people did not want the Spanish there. Because of this, the city was moved to its current home in 1551. In 1908, it officially became the capital of Tolima.

Many different jobs help the city grow. Ibagué is part of a region known for growing coffee. It also has a very large textile industry for making fabrics. This industry is the third largest in the whole country. The city is also a great place for business and investment.
