It serves as the capital of the Lara state and the seat of the Iribarren Municipality. The city is a very important center for industry, trade, and transport. It is also famous for its music. Many people call it the "Music City of Venezuela" because it has so many musical institutions. In fact, the famous conductor Gustavo Dudamel was born here.

It is the fourth-largest city in the whole country.

The city sits on a flat terrace near the banks of the Turbio River.

This terrace is about 600 meters above sea level. The land slopes down from the east toward the west. To the south, the city is bordered by the edge of the Andes mountains. These mountains have many high peaks. Some mountains, like Cerro Lara, rise over 2,251 meters into the sky.

The weather in the city is usually hot and dry. This is called a semi-arid climate. The driest months are from December to March.

Barquisimeto has a very long and moving history. It was first founded in 1552 by Juan de Villegas. At first, it was named Nueva Segovia de Barquisimeto. The city actually moved four different times between 1552 and 1563. One move happened in 1556 because of frequent floods near the Buría River. Another move happened because of strong winds in a different location. Eventually, the people found a permanent home on the north plateau of the Turbio River.

The name "Barquisimeto" might come from a word for an ash-colored river.
