The city actually moved four different times between 1552 and 1563. One move happened in 1556 because of frequent floods near the Buría River. Another move happened because of strong winds in a different location. Eventually, the people found a permanent home on the north plateau of the Turbio River.

Barquisimeto is a major urban, industrial, and commercial center located in central-western Venezuela. It serves as the capital of the Lara state and is the seat of the Iribarren Municipality. Within the country, it holds the distinction of being the fourth-largest city by population. It follows only Caracas, Maracaibo, and Valencia in size. The city is widely recognized as a vital transportational hub. Because of its many musical institutions, it is often called the "Music City of Venezuela." This cultural identity is shared by famous residents, such as the conductor Gustavo Dudamel.

The geography of the city is defined by its position on a terrace. This terrace sits on the banks of the Turbio River. The land is about 600 meters above sea level. The terrain slopes gradually from the eastern part of the city toward the west. To the south, the city sits at the northern edge of the Andes mountains. These mountains include several high peaks. Loma de Leon is the nearest peak at 1,331 meters. Other notable mountains include Cerro Patriciera at 1,629 meters and Cerro Lara at 2,251 meters. To the northwest, the Saroche hills rise, including Cerro Copeyal. To the northeast, the Sierra de Aroa mountains can be seen.

The climate in Barquisimeto is classified as a hot semi-arid climate. This is known scientifically as a Köppen BSh climate. The city experiences an average temperature throughout the year. The driest period occurs from December to March.

While the city is generally dry, the higher regions near the Andes have different conditions. In those areas, temperatures are lower. Rainfall is also more constant in those higher elevations. For example, the city of Sanare receives more annual rainfall than the urban center of Barquisimeto.

History shows that Barquisimeto has been a mobile settlement. Juan de Villegas founded the city in 1552. He originally named it Nueva Segovia de Barquisimeto. The settlement was intended to control territory believed to contain gold. Between 1552 and 1563, the city changed locations four times. The first site was near the Buría River. However, inhabitants suffered from frequent floods and moved in 1556. The second location was in the Turbio River valley. This site was burned down by Lope de Aguirre in 1561. After being rebuilt, the people moved again in 1562 due to strong winds. Finally, in 1563, the city was established on the north plateau of the Turbio River.

The name of the city has several possible origins. The German adventurer Nikolaus Federmann noted that the Caquetío aborigines called the area Variquicimeto. This term translates to "ash-colored river." This referred to the water stream near the city. Spanish conquerors renamed this stream the Turbio River. Another theory suggests the name comes from a red dye called bariquí. The name "Barquisimeto" was later popularized by the writer Oviedo y Baños.

Religion is a central part of the city's social fabric. The modern Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Barquisimeto.

This event is considered one of the largest in the world. In 2013, approximately 3,000,000 faithful people participated. This devotion stems from gratitude for the city being saved from a 19th-century cholera outbreak. The statue is unique because it leaves its temple to travel the main streets.

Today, Barquisimeto is a large city with 930,000 inhabitants. It is a center for higher education with many universities.
