This place is a major center for many jobs. People there raise cattle and work in coal mining. They also focus on farming and agro-industry. The region helps connect the Cesar Department to La Guajira. It is a very important part of the local economy.

The landscape changes quite a bit depending on where you go. Half of the area is made of high mountains. The other half consists of flat plains. These plains sit between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá.

History tells us that the area was first explored by Pedro de Badillo. A German man named Ambrosius Ehinger conquered the land in 1532. Later, Captain Hernando de Santana founded the city in 1550.

The Catholic Church gave it a long name about the holy kings. This was because the city was founded on January 6th. Over time, the name changed to Valledupar. During the 1970s, the city grew very fast. People called it the "Caribbean surprise" because of its success with cotton.

You might also see parrots flying near fruit trees. During the dry season, the trees turn a bright color. The Cañaguate and Puy trees cover the land in yellow blossoms.
