The Puerto Hormiga culture lived there around 4000 BC. They were the first documented human community in what is now Colombia. They lived in a mild climate with plenty of wildlife. These people made some of the oldest ceramic objects in the Americas.

Later, the Monsú culture lived near the northern part of Barú Island. They used pottery and ate a diet of fish and shellfish. Other groups like the Carib people also lived in villages around the bay.

A Spanish leader named Pedro de Heredia founded the city on June 1, 1533.

He named the city after Cartagena in Spain. It was built on the site of an old village called Calamarí. The city soon became a very important center for trade. Ships carried silver from Bolivia to Spain through this port. It was also a place where the Spanish Empire managed its business. The city grew quickly because of its location between two big rivers.

Because the city was so wealthy, it faced many dangers.

Pirates from France, England, and Holland often tried to attack. For example, the pirate Francis Drake attacked in 1586. To stay safe, the city built huge defensive walls.

These walls are 11 kilometers long and surround the historic center. They were built in stages between 1614 and 1796. These forts helped make the city very hard to capture. In 1741, there was even a large battle during the War of Jenkins' Ear.

Today, many people visit Cartagena to see its history.

In 1984, the walled city and its forts became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can still see old buildings like the Convento de Santo Domingo.
