It serves as the capital of the Córdoba department. The city sits in the Sinú valley. It is located away from the Caribbean Sea. However, it has an inland seaport that connects to the sea via the Sinú River. People often call the city "La Perla del Sinú," which means "The Pearl of the River Sinú."

The weather there is mostly warm and moderately humid. Because it is in a valley, the area can sometimes face flooding.

The city is divided by the Sinú River. This river is a very important part of daily life. For a long time, people used wooden rafts called "Planchones" to cross the water. These rafts have roofs and move along a system of manual cables. You can also find many ways to travel around the city. There are taxis, buses, and even motorcycle taxis called "rapimotos." For travelers coming from far away, the Los Garzones Airport connects the city to places like Bogotá and Medellín.

History tells us that the Zenú Indians first lived in this area. They settled near three rivers: the Sinú, the San Jorge, and the Nechí. A Spanish officer named Antonio de la Torre y Miranda founded the city on May 1, 1777. At first, the city was named "San Jerónimo de Buenavista." People still called it Montería, which was the name given by the inhabitants. In 1803, a group of natives burned the city. Because of this, the residents moved back to the east side of the river.

Many different groups of people have made Montería what it is today. The population includes descendants of Spanish, Arab, French, and Italian people. It also includes the Zenú people, who were known for making goldworks and pottery.

The city is famous for its unique culture. It is the home of Porro folklore music. You can also find the Sombrero Vueltiao, which is a national symbol. By 2018, about 490,935 people lived in the city. This makes it one of the ten most important cities in Colombia.

Montería is also known as the "Cattle Farming Capital" of Colombia. Much of the work on the outskirts of town involves cattle ranching. The city even holds a yearly festival to celebrate this. Music is another big part of life here. The city has many stadiums and venues for famous performers. Many famous singers, like Shakira and Juanes, have visited. Even the singer Manuel Turizo grew up on a local cattle farm. You can also find nature in the city at Simon Bolivar Park. There, you might see wild monkeys and sloths living among the trees.
