Montería is a major municipality and city located in northern Colombia. It serves as the capital of the Department of Córdoba. The city sits within the Sinú valley, away from the Caribbean Sea.

It is famously known as "La Perla del Sinú," or "The Pearl of the River Sinú." This title highlights its importance and its relationship with the water. The city is one of the ten most important cities in Colombia. It is divided by the Sinú River, which flows through the landscape. The surrounding area is sparsely populated and filled with tropical flora and fauna.

The Sinú River is central to the geography and movement of the city. While the river is not deep or wide enough for a commercial channel, it provides an inland seaport. This seaport connects the city to the Caribbean Sea. Divers even work in the river to collect high-quality sand. They place the sand in buckets to be used for making cinder blocks. These blocks are used for construction projects in the local and regional areas.

The river also creates a unique way for people to travel. A passenger-only ferry system called "Planchones" uses roofed wooden rafts. These rafts move along a system of manual cable tows. This system was created to cross the river before a proper bridge was built.

The climate in Montería is mainly warm and moderately humid. Because the city lies in a valley, the area is subject to flooding. The population is diverse, including descendants of Spanish, Basque, Arab, French, and Italian people. The region also includes the Indigenous Zenú peoples. The Zenú were a tribe of natives with their own language. They were historically known for producing ornate goldworks and pottery.

By 2018, the population reached approximately 490,935 people. This creates a population density of 160 persons per square kilometer.

History shows that the Zenú Indians first settled the area near three rivers. These are the Sinú, the San Jorge, and the Nechí. On May 1, 1777, Spanish officer Antonio de la Torre y Miranda founded the city. At that time, Juan de Torrezar Díaz Pimienta was the governor of the Province of Cartagena. The city was originally named "San Jerónimo de Buenavista" to honor Saint Jerome. However, the inhabitants already called the area Montería. In 1803, a group of natives burned the city. This caused the residents to move back to the east bank of the Sinú River.

Montería has undergone several political changes over the years. In 1923, it became a municipality of the Bolívar Department. Later, in 1952, it was designated as the capital of the new Department of Córdoba. This separation from Bolívar established its current administrative role. Today, the city is a major hub for transportation. It lies on a major highway connecting Medellín to Sincelejo. This route also extends to Cartagena and Barranquilla. The city is served by Los Garzones Airport, which connects to cities like Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali.

The economy of the region relies heavily on cattle. Montería is considered the "Cattle Farming Capital" of Colombia. Much of the work on the outskirts involves cattle ranching. The city celebrates this industry with a yearly festival. Even famous musicians, like Manuel Turizo, grew up on local cattle farms. Within the city limits, there is a prosperous commercial district. This area includes several shopping centers, malls, and many restaurant chains. This mix of ranching and commerce defines the local economy.

Culture and tourism are also very important to the city. Montería is the home of the Sombrero Vueltiao, a national symbol. It is also the home of Porro folklore music. For visitors, Simon Bolivar Park is a notable site. The park separates the river from 1st Avenue and contains wild monkeys and sloths. The city also features the Colonial-era Cathedral of Saint Jeronimo.
