It serves as the capital and largest city of the León Department. The municipality is situated in the coastal lowlands of northwestern Nicaragua. The Río Chiquito flows along the city. To the east, the landscape rises into the hills and volcanoes of the central highlands. To the west, the Pacific Ocean coast lies nearby. The city is a major center for industry, commerce, and agriculture. It is a vital hub for exporting goods like sugar cane, peanuts, sorghum, and plantains. The region also supports large cattle operations.

León has a deep history that began with its first settlement. Francisco Hernández de Córdoba founded the original city of León in 1524. This first site was located east of the current city. However, a volcanic eruption in 1610 caused a series of earthquakes. These natural disasters forced the inhabitants to abandon the city. The ruins of this original settlement are known as León Viejo. In 1960, archaeologists began excavating these ruins. Today, León Viejo is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The political status of León has shifted throughout Nicaraguan history. For a long time, León served as the national capital. When Nicaragua withdrew from the United Provinces of Central America in 1839, León became the capital of the new nation. For many years, the capital moved back and forth between León and Granada. Liberal political administrations preferred León, while Conservative administrations preferred Granada. To resolve this conflict, a compromise was reached in 1852. The Supreme Director, Fulgencio Vega, proposed Managua as the permanent capital. This ended the long period of shifting political centers.

León is also a famous intellectual and academic center. The National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN) was established in 1813. This makes it the second oldest university in Central America. The city has produced many of Nicaragua's most significant poets. These include Rubén Darío, Alfonso Cortés, and Salomón de la Selva. Darío was a leading figure in the Modernism Poetic Movement. He was even called the "Prince of Spanish Letters" by writers across the Spanish-speaking world.

The architecture of León is rich and diverse. The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of León is a primary landmark. Built between 1747 and 1814, it is a colonial baroque structure. It is the largest cathedral in Central America. Its heavy, anti-seismic construction has helped it survive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. It even survived bombings during civil wars. The cathedral contains several tunnels. These were once used as escape routes from pirates. Today, the cathedral's crypts hold many famous people, including the poet Rubén Darío.

It is located at the east end of the main street, calle Real. Other notable sites include the Church of la Merced and the Church of San Felipe. San Felipe was built in 1685 specifically for black and mulatto worshipers.

León's history also includes more difficult and modern events. The Cárcel la 21 was a prison that held political prisoners. Construction on the facility began in 1910, and it was first occupied in 1921. During the Somoza regime, it was used by the Guardia Nacional. The building's façade was destroyed during fighting in 1979. Since the year 2000, the site has been used as an art museum. The city has seen significant population changes over time. In 1950, the population was 31,000 people. Today, the estimated population of the municipality is 213,718. This growth shows how León has remained a central part of Nicaraguan life.
