The climate in Valladolid is a continentalized hot-summer Mediterranean climate. This means the weather is influenced by both Mediterranean and semi-arid patterns. Because the city is inland and at a high altitude, winters are often cool and windy.

You might see thick morning fog during the winter months. Occasional snow occurs when cold fronts move through the area. The region is drier than the northern coasts of Spain. However, it still receives precipitation throughout the year, with an average annual humidity of 64%.

History in this valley began with the Vaccaei, a Celtic tribe. They were the first documented stable presence in the middle Duero valley. Later, archaeologists found remains of Roman camps and Celtiberian sites nearby. The modern settlement was founded after 1072.

Between 1601 and 1606, Valladolid briefly served as the capital of the Hispanic Monarchy. This happened under the Duke of Lerma, who was the valido, or chief minister, to King Philip III. However, the city's treasury suffered during the Castilian crisis of the 17th century.

Economic changes shaped the city in later centuries. In the 19th century, the creation of the Canal of Castile boosted trade. This made Valladolid the largest wheat market in the region. In the mid-20th century, the city underwent industrialization. It became a major center for the automotive industry.
