Geography defines the surroundings and limits of the city. Santa Marta is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north and west. To the south, the city meets the municipalities of Aracataca and Ciénaga. The city is located 93 km from Barranquilla. It is also 992 km away from the capital, Bogotá. Because the main city center is so close to the coast, expansion has been difficult. The locality of Rodadero is technically separate but is part of Santa Marta.

Long before Spanish arrival, the Tairona people inhabited the region. They were an advanced indigenous group with complex social structures. They built large population centers using stone pathways and terraces. They also created protected waterways and underground stone channels. These channels helped manage water for their communities. The Tairona economy was based on agriculture. They grew crops such as corn, pineapple, and yucca. They also processed salt to use as a major trading commodity. They traded with various groups along the coast and the interior. Archaeological sites show they were skilled in pottery, stonework, and gold.
