He ruled a place called Muyquytá from 1514 until 1537. Some old books call him Bogotá, the Elder. This name might be where the city of Bogotá gets its name. He was the last independent ruler of the southern Muisca. His life changed forever when Spanish soldiers arrived in the Andes.

Before the Spanish came, Tisquesusa had to lead many battles. He fought the Panche people in the west. He also fought the northern Muisca people. This was a very large war between groups. There were 40,000 southern warriors and 50,000 northern warriors. A leader named Sugamuxi helped make a truce. This peace lasted until the Spanish arrived in 1537.

One man named Popón told Tisquesusa that foreigners were coming. Popón was a mohan from the village of Ubaque. Tisquesusa sent a spy to Suesca to learn about the new army. He learned they had weapons that made thunder and lightning sounds. To stay safe, he moved his people away from the capital. He left the capital of Muyquytá empty for the Spanish.

The Spanish soldiers searched for the leader near Facatativá. They found him during a fight at night. A soldier named Alonso Domínguez hurt him with a sword. The soldier did not even know he was attacking a ruler. He only took an expensive mantle from the man. Tisquesusa fled into the mountains with his wounds. He died there, and vultures found him a year later.

After Tisquesusa died, his brother Sagipa became the new leader. This was different from Muisca rules for choosing leaders. Sagipa was the army general before he became the ruler. He was the very last ruler of the southern Muisca. He died in early 1539 after being defeated. His death marked the end of an era for his people.
