The story began with the Muisca people. They lived on a high plateau in the Andes Mountains. Today, this area is part of Colombia. The Muisca were very skilled at making things from gold. They made beautiful jewelry and ornaments to trade with neighbors. They also used gold for special religious ceremonies.

The legend comes from a special Muisca ceremony. When a new leader, called a Zipa, was crowned, he did something amazing. He covered his entire body in gold dust. Then, he would dive into the waters of Lake Guatavita. He did this to honor a goddess who lived in the lake. During this ritual, offerings were also sent into the deep water.

Spanish colonists heard about this "Golden One" in the 16th century. They used the name El Dorado for the leader. Eventually, they began to use the name for the city they thought existed.

Spanish explorers spent many years searching for this wealth. In 1537, Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada reached the Muisca lands.

He and his men conquered the territory for Spain. They took large amounts of gold from temples and palaces. Later, people even tried to drain Lake Guatavita to find more treasure. They found real gold objects there, like the Muisca raft. These items prove the Muisca ceremony was a real part of their history.

Many different people tried to find the golden city in different places. Antonio de Berrio tried to find it in the Guianas. Later, the famous explorer Sir Walter Raleigh also led an expedition there. Some maps in the 17th century showed a huge place called Lake Parime. People thought the golden city was near this lake.

However, a scientist named Alexander von Humboldt later showed that Lake Parime was not real. He proved the lake was just a myth. This helped end the search for the golden city.

The idea of El Dorado has stayed in our minds for a long time. It is a famous mystery that has inspired many stories. Even writers like Voltaire included it in his books.

These stories show that humans have always wondered about hidden treasures. The legend of El Dorado remains a powerful part of our history.
