Legend tells a story about the city's coat of arms. Long ago, two leaders named Ataces and Hermeric were enemies.

Hermeric had a beautiful daughter named Cindazunda. She helped bring peace between the two men. Ataces used a lion and Hermeric used a serpent as symbols. The city's coat of arms shows these two animals together. It honors the peace that Cindazunda helped create.

Coimbra is most famous for its wonderful university. The first Portuguese university started in Lisbon in 1290. It moved to Coimbra in 1308.
