This city acts as a central hub for political, economic, and cultural activities in the region. It is one of the most populous cities in the Republic of Colombia. The municipality has a total population of 544,132 inhabitants. Approximately 500,000 of these residents live within the urban area. This makes Ibagué the eleventh most populous city in the entire country.

The geography of Ibagué is defined by the Colombian Andean region. The city sits within the central mountain range of the Andes. It is surrounded by mountains on almost every side. To the east, the landscape changes into a flat plateau. The city is situated within the Andean Volcanic Belt. This means there are active volcanoes nearby. One is the Nevado del Tolima, located to the northwest. Another is Cerro Machín, which sits west of the city center.

Although Cerro Machín has been dormant for 800 years, it remains geologically active. In 2007, a steam column 400 meters high rose from its crater. Scientists at Ingeominas classify the volcano with a status of "III – Changes in behavior of volcanic activity." However, maps show that an eruption would not affect the city of Ibagué.

History shows how the city's location changed due to conflict. A Spanish captain named Andrés López de Galarza founded the settlement on 14 October 1550. At that time, it was called San Bonifacio de Ibagué del Valle de las Lanzas. The original site was near the municipality of Cajamarca, west of the current city. The local indigenous Pijaos people, led by cacique Ibagué, resisted Spanish colonization. Because of this resistance, the city was re-founded in its current location on 7 February 1551. Later, from April to December 1854, Ibagué briefly served as the capital of New Granada. This happened following a coup d'etat by General José María Melo. In 1908, the city was officially designated as the capital of the newly created Tolima department.

The economy of Ibagué is built on several important sectors. It relies heavily on industry, tourism, and agriculture. The city is part of the Colombian coffee growing axis. Its textile industry is a major force, ranking as the third largest in Colombia. Ibagué is also recognized for its business environment. The World Bank's "Doing Business" report ranks it highly for investment and ease of doing business. In fact, it tops the national rankings after the city of Manizales. The World Trade Center Association even chose Ibagué as a site for a headquarters. It joins Bogotá and Cali as one of only three such locations in the country.

Culture and music are central to the identity of the city. Ibagué is famously known as "The Musical Capital of Colombia and America." This title comes from its many musical monuments and folklore festivities. The Conservatory of Tolima is one of the most prestigious music schools in Colombia. Education is also a major pillar of the community. The University of Tolima was founded in 1945 and became a state university in 1954. The University of Ibagué is another key educational institution.

The city's main public space is the Plaza de Bolívar, which serves as a central park.

Transportation connects Ibagué to the rest of the nation. The city sits at the intersection of national roads 40 and 43. These roads link the city to the Magdalena River Valley and Bogotá. They also connect the city to Armenia, Valle del Cauca, and Honda. A long-distance bus terminal provides travel to major cities like Medellín and Cali. For air travel, the Perales Airport is located to the east. It offers several daily flights to Bogotá and Medellín. This infrastructure supports the movement of people and goods through the Andean region.

Sports also play a significant role in the local culture. The professional soccer team, Deportes Tolima, is a major part of the city. The club was founded on 18 December 1954 by Manuel Rubio Sánchez. The team has won the Liga BetPlay three times, specifically in 2003, 2018, and 2021. Ibagué was also considered as a venue for the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup. The city's diverse population and vibrant traditions continue to make it a vital part of the Colombian landscape.
