Many people call the city "Villavo la bella." They also call it the "Gateway to the Plains." This is because it sits on the path to the vast savannas. These plains are part of the Llanos.

The weather is hot and very wet. Most days are very hot. But, the mountains bring cool breezes at night.

Villavicencio is a busy place for trade. People move cattle and crops through the city. They also find oil and gas in the area.

The city has grown a lot over time. In the 1850s, only about 20 people lived there. By 2018, more than 500,000 people lived in the city. Now, new roads make the drive to Bogotá much faster. It takes only about one and a half hours to drive there.
