It flows through the western half of the country. This river is part of a huge system in the northern Andes mountains. It is 1,528 km long. The river's area covers 24% of the land in Colombia. Most people in the country live near it. In fact, 66% of the population lives in the river's basin.

The river follows a very interesting path through the land. It starts in the south in the Huila Department. There, two mountain ranges called the Cordillera Central and Cordillera Oriental separate the water. The river flows east and then north through a great valley. It reaches a coastal plain and then turns west for about 150 km. Finally, it turns north again to reach the Caribbean Sea. It meets the sea at the city of Barranquilla.

Many different kinds of life live in and around the water. There are 213 known species of fish in the river basin. About 55% of these fish are endemic. This means they live only in this specific area. You can find many animals like the green iguana and the brown pelican. Some animals are in danger of disappearing forever. These include the West Indian manatee and the American crocodile. Even hippopotamuses live in the area now after being brought there long ago.

Humans have used this river for a very long time. Before Europeans arrived, groups like the Muisca lived near it. The Muisca called the river Yuma. In 1501, Rodrigo de Bastidas discovered and named the river. Later, the river was the only way to travel between Bogotá and the sea. Steamboats used to travel the water regularly for many years. Now, new river cruises are starting to visit the river again in 2025. These ships travel between cities like Barranquilla and Cartagena.

The river has also changed the way we eat. The first European contact with the potato happened in the Magdalena Valley in 1537. The Spanish learned about this crop there. Around 1570, a Spanish ship took potatoes to Europe. The river is also a famous place in books and films. Many stories use the river to show the history of Colombia. It is a place where nature and human history meet.
