Yangtze Plain

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Yangtze Plain is a very special part of China. It sits along the Yangtze River and its main branches. This area is made of many flat lands called alluvial plains. These plains form from soil left behind by flowing water. The plain begins just east of a place called Yichang. This spot is in the Hubei province.

There are different parts to this large area. The Middle Yangtze Plain covers many different provinces. These include parts of Hunan, Hubei, and Jiangxi. This section has three large lakes. Their names are Dongting, Poyang, and Hong lakes. The Middle-Lower Yangtze Plain starts at Mount Wu. It stretches all the way to the coast.

This land has a very interesting way of forming. The Yangtze River and its branches carry soil downstream. This soil settles to create the flat plains. This process is how the alluvial deposits build up. The land can feel quite wet and swampy. Many rivers and lakes flow through the area.

People call this area the "land of fish and rice." This name comes from the many things that grow there. The wet land is great for growing rice. It is also a good place for freshwater fish. Farmers grow many other things on this plain too. They grow tea, silk, and rapeseed. They also grow broad beans and tangerines.

The plain connects to many different parts of the country. The Lower Yangtze Plain includes the Yangtze River Delta. This delta is where the river meets the sea. The whole area is a major part of Central China. It is a place where water and land meet. This makes the region very important for life.
