The Sichuan Basin is a huge lowland region in southwestern China.

It is a very special place because mountains surround it on all sides. This shape makes it look like a giant bowl. The basin covers part of Sichuan Province and part of Chongqing Municipality. Because the land inside is often flat, it has very good soil. This makes it perfect for growing lots of food. People often call this area the breadbasket of China because of its rice.

Water plays a big part in how this basin works. The upper Yangtze River flows through the region. Many other smaller rivers, called tributaries, also flow into the basin. In the west, the Min River fans out to create the Chengdu Plain. This plain is made of alluvial soil, which is soil left behind by rivers. Much of the rest of the basin is covered in rolling hills. These hills are actually the worn-down remains of the old basin floor.

Traveling to the basin has been a hard job for a long time. A famous poet named Li Bai once said the road there was harder than the road to heaven. Long ago, people used the Yangtze River to move things. In the 4th century BCE, people built the Shu Roads to connect to the north. There is even a story about a Stone Cattle Road used by the Qin in 316 BC. In the 20th century, new ways to travel arrived. The Chengyu Railway was finished in 1952 to connect Chengdu and Chongqing.

Today, the Sichuan Basin is a very busy place with many people.

About 100 million people live in this region. Large cities like Chengdu and Chongqing are found here. Other important cities include Mianyang, Leshan, and Yibin. The area is also known for its unique culture and spicy food.

People there often speak Sichuanese, which is a branch of Mandarin Chinese. In the 21st century, new industries like high-tech and aerospace are growing fast.

You can see how people work with nature to move around today. Because of the mountains, engineers must build special things. They build long tunnels like the Zhongnanshan Tunnel to go through mountains. They also build tall bridges like the Sidu River Bridge to cross deep gaps. Many expressways, such as the G5 or G42, now cross the basin. These roads help connect the basin to the rest of China. It is amazing to see how people have mastered such tricky land.
