This is a huge number of speakers. If it were its own language, it would rank tenth in the world. It sits just behind Japanese in size. Most people speak it in the Sichuan Basin. This area includes almost all of Sichuan Province and Chongqing. It is also used in parts of Hubei, Guizhou, Yunnan, Hunan, and Shaanxi. Many different groups, like the Tibetan and Yi people, use it as a second language. It is a vital way for people in this region to share ideas.

Speaking Sichuanese involves many different sounds and tones. There are five main tones used in these dialects. These are the dark level, light level, rising, departing, and entering tones. Some dialects, like the Minjiang dialect, keep the entering tone. Other dialects merge that tone into different ones. For example, the Chengdu-Chongqing dialect merges it into the light level tone. The Chengdu dialect is very important for local culture. It is the main way people perform Sichuan opera. This dialect is often called the most representative of the region.

The way people speak changed because of history. Long ago, in the thirteenth century, the population of Sichuan dropped. This happened because of plagues and Mongol invasions. Later, during the Ming dynasty, many people moved to Sichuan. These immigrants came from places like Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, and Guangdong. They brought their own languages with them. These new words mixed with the older ways of speaking. This created the modern Sichuanese we hear today. It is a mix of many different histories.

There are four main sub-dialects to know. The first is the Chengdu-Chongqing dialect. People call this "New Sichuanese" because it has fewer old traits. The second is the Minjiang dialect. This is often called "Old Sichuanese." It keeps sounds from an extinct language called Bashu. The third is the Renshou-Fushun dialect. This one merges the entering tone into the departing tone. The fourth is the Ya'an–Shimian dialect. This one merges that tone into the dark level tone. Each group has its own unique way of sounding.

Sichuanese is quite different from Standard Chinese. Only about 47.8% of its words are the same as the Beijing dialect. The rest comes from older Chinese or the languages of immigrants. Some words are even borrowed from English! You might hear unique phrases like "pa er duo." This is a special Sichuanese word for a henpecked husband. Some words even have two ways to say them. There are colloquial ways used in daily life. There are also literary ways used in books. This makes the language a rich and living thing.
